{"id":8595,"date":"2016-02-01T10:38:20","date_gmt":"2016-02-01T00:38:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paradisec.org.au\/blog\/?p=8595"},"modified":"2016-02-01T10:53:46","modified_gmt":"2016-02-01T00:53:46","slug":"toolbox-to-elan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.paradisec.org.au\/blog\/2016\/02\/toolbox-to-elan\/","title":{"rendered":"Toolbox to Elan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the spirit of solving small\u00a0frustrations I offer my weekend experience of getting Toolbox files into <a href=\"https:\/\/tla.mpi.nl\/tools\/tla-tools\/elan\">Elan<\/a>. I have over a hundred texts in <a href=\"http:\/\/languages-linguistics.unimelb.edu.au\/thieberger\/sefate.html\">Nafsan<\/a>, most of which are time-aligned and interlinearised. I am working with Stefan Schnell on adding <a href=\"http:\/\/bamling-research.de\/content\/graid_main.html\">GRAID<\/a> annotation to some of these texts and the preferred way of doing this is in Elan, with the GRAID annotation at the morphemic-level. I tried importing Toolbox files using the Elan &#8216;Import&#8217; menu, and had listed all field markers in Toolbox, together with their internal dependencies (which should then map to Elan&#8217;s relationship\u00a0between tiers). These settings are stored in an external file. Unfortunately, the import\u00a0failed several\u00a0times, despite changing\u00a0the settings slightly after each attempt. <!--more-->I sent the file to Han Sloetjes (the developer of Elan at the MPI) who promptly sent it back, corrected. For those who have read this far and who are likely to be trying this too, the key was in not including the ELANBegin and ELANEnd fields (which store timecodes) in the marker hierarchy.
