{"id":6053,"date":"2011-11-27T11:57:37","date_gmt":"2011-11-27T00:57:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paradisec.org.au\/blog\/?p=6053"},"modified":"2011-11-27T11:57:37","modified_gmt":"2011-11-27T00:57:37","slug":"langfest-2011-inspiration-and-exhilaralation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.paradisec.org.au\/blog\/2011\/11\/langfest-2011-inspiration-and-exhilaralation\/","title":{"rendered":"Langfest 2011 &#8211; inspiration and exh(ilar)alation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canberra is breath-taking at the moment, and I am just catching breath between marking and <a href=\"http:\/\/law.anu.edu.au\/coast\/events\/langfest\/conference.htm\">Langfest<\/a> \u2026  it starts today with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.edu.au\/school\/hss\/events\/asfs-2011.html\">French Studies<\/a> conference.  <\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow=Monday, dictionary-making, with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.australex.org\/a11.html\">AUSTRALEX<\/a>, and a keynote by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lucy-cav.cam.ac.uk\/pages\/the-college\/people\/sarah-ogilvie.php\">Sarah Ogilvie<\/a>, the soon-to-be-director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/andc.anu.edu.au\/\">Australian National Dictionary Centre<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p>Wednesday brings New Zealand and Australia together with the combined <a href=\"http:\/\/law.anu.edu.au\/coast\/events\/langfest\/alaa_alanz.htm\">mega-conference<\/a> of the applied linguistics associations of New Zealand and Australia (ALAA-ALANZ) at the University of Canberra<\/p>\n<p>Thursday sees a session on Indigenous language revival and revitalisation at the start of the <a href=\"http:\/\/law.anu.edu.au\/coast\/events\/langfest\/als.htm\">Australian Linguistics Society<\/a> conference and shared with ALAA-ALANZ at the University of Canberra.  Then we whiz back to ANU for ALS&#8217;s first poster session which contains several posters on endangered languages, followed by Canberra&#8217;s first <a href=\"http:\/\/www.paradisec.org.au\/blog\/2011\/11\/child-language-documentation-a-lip-discussion\/\">Linguistics in the Pub<\/a> session.<\/p>\n<p>Friday is a big day on <a href=\"http:\/\/law.anu.edu.au\/coast\/events\/langfest\/joint_day.htm\">Language and the Law<\/a> at ANU \u2013 language rights of different types. ALS has <a href=\"http:\/\/langfest.anu.edu.au\/index.php\/als\/ALS2011\/schedConf\/presentations\">heaps of papers<\/a> on endangered languages.  And our workshop on <em>Kids kriols and classrooms<\/em>. And Jenny Green and Barb Kelly&#8217;s workshop on <em>Current issues in non-verbal communication research<\/em>.  That was the trigger for getting sign language interpreting for some sessions on Friday and Saturday \u2013 very professional interpreters, and brings home the cost of language rights.  It&#8217;s easy enough to ask for Governments to pay for language rights. But it makes us much more aware of what we are asking when societies like ALS and ALAA and conference attenders realise the cost to themselves of language rights.<\/p>\n<p>And, and, and, Saturday has a class on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.anu.edu.au\/Coast\/events\/langfest\/GamilaraayWorkshop.htm\">learning and teaching Gamilaraay<\/a>. AND a workshop on <em>Modality in the Indigenous languages of Australia and PNG,<\/em> as well as other papers on endangered languages (<a href=\"http:\/\/langfest.anu.edu.au\/index.php\/als\/ALS2011\/paper\/view\/1661\">perception in Avatime<\/a>?, <a href=\"http:\/\/langfest.anu.edu.au\/index.php\/als\/ALS2011\/paper\/view\/691\">fronting in Mawng<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/langfest.anu.edu.au\/index.php\/als\/ALS2011\/paper\/view\/5471\">voicing in Gurindji Kriol<\/a>).  Sunday has lots of papers in the general session and workshops from <a href=\"http:\/\/langfest.anu.edu.au\/index.php\/als\/ALS2011\/paper\/view\/5501\">telling who intentionally does what in Sherpa<\/a>, to <a href=\"http:\/\/langfest.anu.edu.au\/index.php\/als\/ALS2011\/paper\/view\/531\">body-parts in Kriol and Dalabon<\/a>, to <a href=\"http:\/\/langfest.anu.edu.au\/index.php\/als\/ALS2011\/paper\/view\/5091\">Topic Continuity of Subject and Non-Subject in Squliq Atayal Legends: Evidence from Statistics<\/a>.  There&#8217;s also a s<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrelp.org\/events\/workshops\/audio2011\/\">pecial audio workshop<\/a> run by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrelp.org\/aboutus\/staff\/index.php?cd=davidnathan\">David Nathan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And, completely breathless by now, we down the last arvo tea, and head to Kioloa for <a href=\"http:\/\/law.anu.edu.au\/coast\/events\/langfest\/grad_master.htm\">master classes<\/a>  &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stanford.edu\/~bresnan\/\">Joan Bresnan<\/a> on Probabilistic syntax (up to us to think how can we do it with small data sets as we normally have for endangered languages) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mpi.nl\/people\/jordan-fiona\">Fiona Jordan<\/a> on Cultural phylogeny.
