I had a taste of this a week ago in Tennant Creek, where I learnt of a freshly released album from Iwantja Band, now on <a href=\"http:\/\/musicnt.com.au\/2011\/05\/06\/iwantja-band-launch-palya\/\">their launch journey<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/musicnt.ning.com\/photo\/album\/show?id=2764139%3AAlbum%3A38976&amp;xg_source=activity\">Iwantja Band launch <em>Palya<\/em><\/a>).<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 258px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/musicnt.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/image1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Cover art for 'Palya'\" src=\"http:\/\/musicnt.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/image1.jpg\" alt=\"cover art for 'Palya'\" width=\"268\" height=\"236\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cover art for &#39;Palya&#39;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I caught some of the enthusiasm from <a href=\"http:\/\/musicnt.com.au\/2011\/05\/25\/song-people-patrick-mccloskey\/\">Patrick McCloskey<\/a>, a freelance music producer working with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barklyarts.com.au\/winanjjikari.php\">Winanjjikari Music Centre<\/a> ((The name is Warumungu, <em>wina-njji-kari<\/em> &#8216;sing-Nom-Genitive&#8217;; see also <a href=\"blog http:\/\/winanjjikarimusiccentre.blogspot.com\/\">WMC&#8217;s blog<\/a>)) at Tennant Creek.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the songs on the album (eg Kungka Nyuntu, Wamanguru) are in Pitjantjatjara \/ Yankunytjatjara, languages spoken at Iwantja (perhaps better known as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indulkana,_South_Australia\">Indulkana<\/a>), some 900km south of Tennant Creek. It suited the band to use a studio not in a city, or in intermediate Alice Springs, but at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barklyarts.com.au\/winanjjikari.php\">Winanjjikari<\/a> in Tennant Creek. And there is more to the mix, as the band&#8217;s manager says in <a href=\"http:\/\/musicnt.com.au\/2010\/10\/02\/the-next-big-thing-iwantja-band\/\">an interview<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Music NT<\/strong>: It\u2019s so great that the band sing in language \u2013 do you think the success of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Geoffrey_Gurrumul_Yunupingu\">Gurrumul<\/a> around the world is an encouragement to Indigenous bands like Iwantja?<br \/>\n<strong>Mark Smerdon<\/strong> [Iwantja Band\u2019s manager]: I guess so\u2026 The connection with Gurrumul is quite strong as Stewart is his first cousin, has a similar sounding voice and wrote many songs with Gurrumul. Jeremy sees his role as bridging the gap between European culture and Anangu culture and language is a very important component in that.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Funding has come to the <a href=\"http:\/\/songpeoples.tumblr.com\/\">Song Peoples Project<\/a>, under the umbrella of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barklyarts.com.au\/\">Barkly Regional Arts<\/a>, from MILR (the Australian Government <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arts.gov.au\/indigenous\/MILR\">Maintenance of Indigenous Languages and Records Program<\/a>); and from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barklyarts.com.au\/winanjjikari.php\">Winanjjikari Music Centre<\/a>&#8216;s partnership with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wantokmusik.org\">Wantok Musik Foundation<\/a> which thus brings in links with Melanesia.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018<em>Palya<\/em> will be available to download at iTunes soon, and is also available from <a href=\"http:\/\/caama.com.au\/caama-shop\">CAAMA Music stores in Alice Springs<\/a>&#8216; ((<a href=\"http:\/\/musicnt.com.au\/2011\/05\/06\/iwantja-band-launch-palya\/\">http:\/\/musicnt.com.au\/2011\/05\/06\/iwantja-band-launch-palya\/<\/a>)); Iwantja Band already have two tracks on <a href=\"http:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/au\/album\/snapshot\/id437285045\">the album &#8216;SnapShot&#8217; on the iTunes Store<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Iwantja Band (and much more) will be at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barklyarts.com.au\/desertharmony.php\">Desert Harmony Festival 2011 Anyinginyi Manu<\/a> ((The Warumungu name is <em>anyi-nginyi manu<\/em> &#8216;1stPluralInclusive-Genitive country&#8217;)) in Tennant Creek, 26 August &#8211; 4 September 2011, and a further launch is planned for Borroloola in October 2011.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Around the remoter parts of Australia there&#8217;s a ferment of contemporary music and Australian languages.
