The theme this year is &#8220;Endangered languages: who cares?&#8221;<br \/>\nEndangered Languages Week will presents a variety of displays, discussions, films, and workshops to provide a view of what is happening to languages around the world and what is being done to document, archive and support endangered languages at SOAS and elsewhere.  Activities will include:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrelp.org\/events\/publiclecture2009\/index.html\">Annual Public Lecture<\/a> &#8211; Bernard Spolsky on &#8220;Rescuing Maori: the last 40 years&#8221;\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrelp.org\/events\/elw2009\/mel.html\">Meet an Endangered Language<\/a> &#8211; a series of short presentations on several endangered languages, where you can learn about where they are spoken, why they are threatened, and experience their culture &#8211; as well as learn some basic words and phrases. This year we feature Eleme, Guern\u00e9siais, Khanty and Gamilaraay.\n<li>Open Day &#8211; we open our doors so visitors can meet researchers, see displays of staff and student work, and experience the latest technologies used to record, archive and support endangered languages\n<li>Debate.  Languages vs species? &#8211; A debate on priorities of preservation in an endangered world. <a href=\"\/blog\/debate-sm.html\" onclick=\"window.open('http:\/\/blogs.usyd.edu.au\/elac\/debate-sm.html','popup','width=214,height=300,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/debate-sm-thumb.gif\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n[ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrelp.org\/events\/elw2009\/debate-print.pdf\">Click for full-sized poster<\/a>]<\/p>\n<li>Postgraduate students will present their work in poster sessions\n<li>A two day workshop on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrelp.org\/events\/workshops\/ideology\/index.html\">Beliefs and ideology on endangered languages<\/a> (see also <a href=\"\/blog\/2009\/01\/beliefs-and-ideology-on-endangered-languages\/\">here<\/a>)\n<li>a day of international films on endangered languages\n<li>displays from other organisations involved in endangered languages activities<\/ul>\n<p>Most events are free of charge and open to anyone who is interested in endangered languages.
