{"id":3730,"date":"2008-09-16T09:28:25","date_gmt":"2008-09-16T09:28:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paradisec.org.au\/blog\/2008\/09\/spreading-the-word\/"},"modified":"2011-02-05T07:49:19","modified_gmt":"2011-02-05T07:49:19","slug":"spreading-the-word","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.paradisec.org.au\/blog\/2008\/09\/spreading-the-word\/","title":{"rendered":"Spreading the word"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the Linguistics Association of Great Britain (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lagb.org.uk\/\">LAGB<\/a>) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.essex.ac.uk\/lagb2008\/\">conference<\/a> held at the University of Essex last week, there was a discussion session with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historyofart.bham.ac.uk\/west.htm\">Professor Shearer West<\/a>, recently appointed Director of Research at the Arts and Humanities Research Council (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ahrc.ac.uk\">AHRC<\/a>). During the discussion she emphasised that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ahrc.ac.uk\/About\/Policy\/Pages\/KnowledgeTransferPolicy.aspx\">&#8220;knowledge transfer&#8221;<\/a> is now an essential expectation of all AHRC grant applications, where &#8220;knowledge transfer&#8221; means &#8220;ensur[ing] that the research we fund can be used to make a difference beyond academia&#8221;. Apparently the AHRC feels that researchers in Arts and Humanities in the UK have been traditionally rather poor at disseminating their knowledge outside the ivy towers and wants to push them more in this direction. Specifically, this includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>promot[ing] the interests of arts and humanities research and its value to our social, economic and cultural life\n<li>increas[ing] the amount of high quality research supporting special exhibitions, resdisplays and conservation<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n&#8220;Well&#8221;, I thought, &#8220;the first of these is the kind of thing I have been banging on about for the last several years under the banner of <a href=\"\/blog\/2007\/04\/communicating-about-our-work\/\">communicating about our work<\/a>, including events like our <a href=\"\/blog\/2008\/04\/endangered-languages-week-2008\/\">annual<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrelp.org\/events\/elw2008\/index.html\">Endangered Languages Week<\/a> at SOAS, and my recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/books\/2008\/aug\/27\/endangered.languages\">Top 10 Endangered Languages<\/a> on the Guardian website&#8221;.
