Scope and Content

The totality of Arthur Capell textual collection consists of some thirty boxes of notes which have been archived and documented by his executor, Peter Newton. The full collection of Arthur Capell materials includes recordings of languages taken while on his various field trips in both Australia, Asia and the Pacific. Not all these materials are not documented here. What is documented in this guide are some of the records relating to his non-Australian linguistic work that have been digitally imaged. Some of these are associated with the field recordings held by Paradisec. The Australian Institute of Aborignal and Torres Strait Islander Studies holds his Australian Aboriginal language recordings.

The imaging of the part of the collection on this site was done using a Canon Poweshot G6, initially using Austehc's (the Australian Science and Technology Heritage Centre) tripod and lights, by Nick Thieberger. In 2005, funding was received from an ARC LIEF grant which allowed Peter Newton to catalogue the material and Corinne Bannister to image and enter the metadata for the bulk of the documents in Sydney, using PARADISEC's tripod and lights. Higher resolution copies of the images are stored in the PARADISEC archive. The Austehc HDMS software was used to create this online guide. The transcription of the cataloguing information was completed largely by Davis McCarthy and the serialisation and summarising of the guide was completed largely by David Heaton, both under the auspices and coordination of Gavan McCarthy, the Director of Austehc.
