Galiwin’ku
Indigenous Knowledge Centre: A Gupapuyngu Daygurrgurr perspective
Joe
Neparrnga Gumbula
While the Galiwin’ku Indigenous Knowledge centre was built in 2002, the concept
grew in the 1970s from the village councils’ leaders who wanted to preserve and
promote a wider understanding of Yolngu culture. The main ideas behind the GIKC
remain the same: education and preservation of culture. Its long term aim is
the use of digital technology to archive old and new collections of Yolngu
material for access by the community.
Following our gurruthu (kinship) system, each clan will have their own
perspectives on how to contribute to the project. Interpretations may differ,
but all the clans will operate on the basis of the same original structure. In
this presentation I will discuss the ways my clan Gupapuyngu Daygurrgurr is
involved in the GIKC and describe its participation framework.
